Tigray constructing over 450 million Birr worth safe water facilitiesDate: 09 May 2009Mekele, May 9, 2009 (Mekele) - Various safe water facilities are being constructed in various towns and rural localities of Tigray State at a cost of more than 450 million Birr, the State's Water Resource Development, Mines and Energy Bureau said. Bureau head, Michael Tsegaye told ENA that drilling of 850 medium deep water wells, 545 hand dug wells and development of 128 are among the facilities being executed in areas with acute shortage of relevant facilities. Efforts are being made to complete the construction of the facilities as per schedule. The head said the State's government has been striving to reach the safe water service coverage in the state to more than 70 percent. A study aiming at addressing safe water service across the State in 2004 E.C is being conducted. He said the bureau envisaged constructing dams with a capacity of holding up to 140 million cubic meters of water for the same purpose. The bureau has been conducing a study aiming at constructing a dam to alleviate shortage of safe water facilities in Mekele town at a cost of 190 million Birr. The dam would have a capacity of holding 144 million cubic meters of water. Similar efforts are well underway in other towns of the State, he added. Click HERE to go to the source of this article. |
