Union lauds Ethiopia's decision on asset access for repatriated Eritreans

Addis Ababa, May 23 (ENA) - Eritrea Democratic Union commended the Ethiopian government’s decision concerning the repatriated Eritreans.

It is to be recalled that the Ethiopian Council of Ministers passed decision on the enforcement of the regulation providing access for Eritreans to their assets in Ethiopia, privilege to make use of it and invest in Ethiopia.

In a press conference it gave here on Friday in connection with the Eritrean 18th Liberation Day, the Union said the Eritreans are saddening in the last 18 years since their country has not been democratic and peaceful.

Union chairperson, Tewolde Gebresilassie said the directive passed by the Ethiopian government demonstrated that the Ethiopian people have never been an enemy to the people of Eritrea.

He said the directive is also a blow to some media outlets which have been reporting to give bad faces for the long standing people-to-people relation of the two neighboring countries.

The union has granted full support for the directive, since it further enhances the people-to-people relation of the two nations, he said.

The chairperson said though the Eritrean people have been struggling for peace and democracy, due to the current dictatorial government it is not paying off.

The chairperson said the union, which is a coalition of some 13 opposition parties based in neighboring countries, is struggling to establish a democratic government in Eritrea.

The situation in Eritrea is very challenging citizens have no right to engage in any political activities.

Hence, the chairperson calls on the international community to back the Union’s effort to ensure the rights of Eritrean people.

The chairperson said the ultimate goal of the union charter is to inject a multi-party democratic system in the country.
