Construction of Axum University kicks-off

The construction of Axum University, which would be carried out with an outlay of more than 21 million birr allocated by the federal government, was officially launched yesterday.

Speaking at a ceremony organized in Axum town marking the launching of the construction, the Coordinator of the University,Dr. Mebrahtu Mesfin, said the construction is being carried out as part of the government's plan to meet the shortage of trained manpower in the country and enhance execution capacity.

Dr. Mebrahtu said the university is one of the 13 new universities to be built across the nation. On going operational Axum University will have nine faculties and 54 departments.

The university, which will rest on 100 hectares of land ,will be constructed in four phases and upon completion of the first phase in the coming academic year it will admit 2,500 students.Upon going fully operational in four years, the university will enroll 9,000 students, the coordinator stated.

Technical Supervisor of the Construction and Representative of German Technical Cooperation(GTZ), Joachim Dieter, said the efforts being exerted by the government to produce trained personnel giving due attention to education is encouraging, and added that GTZ has started its activity of technical supervision of the construction.

Representative of Sur Construction, the contractor to build the university, Sileshi Mengistu, said on his part the company will meet the set schedule for the construction and requested the cooperation of relevant governmental organizations and the public.

More than 7,000 residents of the town and students expressed their joy over the launching of the construction.
